Sports Scholarships

East Durham College operate sport scholarships in Boxing, Football and Rugby Union.

Potential stars of the future can apply for a place at the College’s unique Sports Scholarship Programme - which has been created to support athletes that may have just missed out or slipped through the net at a professional club.

The scholarship programme, which is based between the College's Peterlee Campus and its Houghall Campus in Durham, started in September 2011, and provides successful applicants with an attractive package of incentives and support - along with expert coaching and guidance from the Academy’s coaching team of ex-professionals.

Successful scholarship winners are enrolled on to a Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport which progresses over a possible 2 years on to the Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence), which is equivalent to three A Levels. Scholars will also gain sports coaching and officiating awards.

They also receive training in sports nutrition, performance analysis and sports science and psychology.

The College Principal said: “We wanted to create a scholarship that would attract, and reward, the best of the region’s young elite athletes and provide them with an excellent opportunity to develop their sporting skills and performance - whist still getting a qualification.”

Another major bonus is that we work in partnership with Durham University increasing the opportunities available to our scholarship students to progress on to Durham.

The students also have access to the College's in-house physiotherapy service and prehabilitation training to helping them avoid sport injuries or speed up recovery.

The Principal added: “There are only 20 places available for football and 20 for rugby - so this really is an exclusive programme.”

To be eligible to apply you must be aged 16 or 17 on or before 1st September. You should be county standard or above; selection is via a trial. You will also need to have/get four GCSEs at grade C or above.
