Overview of the course:

The course is the perfect preparation for mature students who want to study a science related degree course. The first unit of the course focuses on Study Skills and application to university. The course is divided into two semesters, which have a range of units in them. Units are graded at either a pass, merit or distinction – the credits available for each unit range between 3 and 9.

Entry requirements: 

As GCSE Maths and English are often a requirement to progress to Higher Education, we would prefer you to have passed GCSE in these subjects at grade 4 or above. Alternatively, equivalent level 2 qualifications may be acceptable.

Topics: 

• Animal Behaviour - develops an understanding of the key principles of animal behaviour. It further aims to develop and apply skills in observing, recording and analysing behaviour in selected animal species.
• Animal Management - develops knowledge of key responsibilities for animal welfare in a variety of contexts. In particular, it aims to improve the understanding of animal health and husbandry and apply appropriate skills in handling and animal management.
• Ecology – develops your understanding of key ecological concepts and the relationships between the distribution of organisms and their environment.
• Core Science - develops learners’ understanding of (i) elements, biological molecules, genetics, energy sources and radioactivity, and (ii) the practical application of the scientific process to investigate, test and report on a hypothesis.
• Conservation - promotes the development of understanding of the principles of conservation and the competing interests that challenge conservation policy and practice. In particular, it aims to provide the knowledge required to develop and sustain a coherent approach to environmental conservation.
• Environmental Chemistry – develops knowledge of how chemical processes interact within the natural environment. In particular, it aims to develop skills in identifying and analysing the environmental impact of changes in the chemical composition of the environment.
• Environmental Studies Research Skills - develops an understanding of the complex relationships between the various components that make up global environmental issues. In particular, it aims to facilitate those research skills that develop critical and analytical evaluation.
• Major Scientific Project - develops skills in research project planning, methodology, data analysis and report writing in accordance with established scientific protocols. In particular, it aims to develop experience of organising and reporting on a piece of original research.
• Maths: Algebra, Data and Statistics – covers a range of mathematical principals that are important for study at HE.
• Study Skills – helps you plan your time and develop the skills that are essential for success on your access course.
• ICT – develops your software skills and how best to utilise programmes to suit the demands of your studies.
• HE Research – prepares you for you university application and how to decide on the best course for you.

How is the course assessed?: 

You will be assessed by a variety of methods, which may include essays, written assignments, seen exams, unseen exams, academic posters, debates, research projects, presentations, analysis of published articles, etc.

The course can be used to support entry into higher education such as HNC/D, Foundation Degree, Degree at university or college or can also be used to support entry into employment. Fees: 

If you are 19 - 23 years old fees are £3384.00
If you are over 23 years old a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is available for this course, fees are £3384.00
If you are aged 19-23 years old you may be required to pay fees for your course, however if you do not already have a level 3 qualification, or you are in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group, your fees may be paid by the Government.
If you are aged 24 or over you could apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the cost of your course.
This course is not available for learners aged under 19 years old.
Even better news it that Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding 24+ Advanced Learning Loans you owe for an Access to HE course if you complete a higher education course. This means you don’t have to repay it.
