Following successful completion of this course you may gain employment in the land-based sector as a kennel assistant, assistant dog groomer, or retail assistant in a pet store. Progression to the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care or an apprenticeship in the animal care industry may also be an option to enable you to gain more experience working hands-on.

Overview of the course: 

You will cover a mixture of theory and practical topics and get hands-on experience working in the Houghall animal unit. The unit houses a variety of animals from rabbits and guinea pigs, exotics, small 'furries', cats, dogs and ferrets. You will also have opportunity to learn new skills working on the farm at Houghall with a variety of different breeds of sheep, pigs and cows. Throughout the year you will cover a mixture of theory and practical activities and will collect evidence to demonstrate the skills that you are gaining. This work will then be used to build a portfolio of evidence for the course. The course will also give you an opportunity to learn valuable employability skills.

Entry requirements: 

Minimum of 3 GCSEs or equivalent (Progress to functional skills (Entry 3) Progression entry - An Entry 3 qualification (Minimum entry 2 maths and English)

Topics: 

Topics covered in the course include: maths & English, work experience and safe working practices, assisting with animal feeding and accommodation, farm livestock, animal exercise, and small animal husbandry.

How is the course assessed?: 

You will be assessed throughout the course with written tasks and practical activities. There is also a multiple choice test on safe working and health and safety.

Further study options after this course: 

Following successful completion of the course, progression options include the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care, Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants, Level 2 Work-based Diploma in Environmental Conservation, and Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care.

Fees: 

If you have been a UK resident for the past 3 years and are under the age of 19 on the 31st August, you will not usually need to pay any course fees.

If you are aged 19+ years old you may be required to pay fees for your course, however if you are in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group or other work related benefit and you are undertaking this qualification to find work, your fees may be paid by the Government.

Learners under 25 years old with a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan will not pay fees.

City & Guilds Group Bursaries
City & Guilds Group Bursaries are available to learners starting or completing a City & Guilds or ILM qualification, starting courses on or after 1st September 2017.

To qualify learners need to be able to
- Demonstrate genuine financial need that would otherwise prevent them from completing their chosen qualification
- Be over 19 years old
- Be a UK resident.

Bursaries range from £200 to £10,000 and can cover any costs that arise as a result of the learner undertaking a City & Guilds or ILM qualification.
