Annual Maths Challenge 2009

East Durham College’s Annual Maths Challenge The annual East Durham College maths challenge, which has been running for near 20 years, took place for the first time at the brand new East Durham College Peterlee Campus. The event was held on Wednesday 1st April but the 12 teams that took part were clearly no fools.

St. Bedes, Dene Community, Easington Community, Seaham, Shotton Hall and Wellfield Community secondary schools were all represented by two teams. The Year 10 and 11 students took part in 8 fiercely competed rounds, which included a mix of maths questions and problem solving tasks.  These included constructing a windmill and uses for a rubber glove.

The scores were nip and tuck all the way, but eventually Seaham School’s A-Team emerged victories.  The runners up, only 4 points behind, were Shotton Hall School’s B-Team. The winning team of Emily Parker, Richard Corner, Samuel Cummings (Team Captain) and Scott Reid were delighted to take the trophy back to Seaham School taking Wellfield’s crown. Samuel said that he was very proud to win and of his team.
