Apprentices Aim For Full Time Career At Mecaplast
Four budding engineers are aiming to secure full time positions when they complete their apprenticeships with Mecaplast Peterlee.
Connor Bennett, 18, Ryan Esteris, 19, Daniel Parkin, 20, and Thomas Gorham, 19, started the four-year programmes in September 2016.
Thomas and Daniel are working in the tool room while Ryan is on the shop floor as a machine setter and Connor is in the engineering maintenance department. If they all complete their apprenticeships they will be awarded a HNC in engineering and manufacturing.
The four lads each spend one day a week at East Durham College, while every other week tutor Dion Bowes comes on-site to give them one-to-one support to help them progress.
Connor said: “I am really enjoying working here. The apprenticeship is very well structured and I love coming to work.”
Thomas spent a year volunteering with Mecaplast to gain invaluable experience which heled him secure the apprenticeship position.
He said: “The aim for me is to prove myself and be taken on full time when I complete my apprenticeship.”
All four lads are employed by specialist training company Sora until the end of their apprenticeship.
Dion said: “I spend time with Connor, Ryan, Dan and Thomas to support them through their apprenticeship, providing any additional training they may need. They’re all doing very well and have the right attitude to progress.”
Dan said: “I am really enjoying working here and hopefully come the end of my apprenticeship I’ll have the chance to get a full time job.”
Ryan added: “Mecaplast is a really good place to work. I like coming in each day and am really enjoying it.”
Kareen James-Rawson is HR Manager. She said: “We have four great lads who are all progressing well during their time with us.”
