Under this apprenticeship, you'll gain hands-on, authentic experience of working in a florists. You'll learn alongside experienced, senior members of staff who will guide you along the way, while you'll also complete other, theory-based work either at your employer's premises or at college.
As a floristry apprentice, you can learn a wide variety of new skills including flower/plant care, how to create hand-tied flower designs, how to create floral arrangements, wedding/funeral/sympathy designs and more. As a customer-facing role, you'll also learn how to be polite, manage a till and how to be a more effective communicator.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to start your career in floristry. You'll be actually based in a real florists, earning hands-on, practical experience from people who do floristry for a living.
During your apprenticeship you'll work towards a qualification in floristry and as an apprentice you're eligible for earning an apprenticeship wage while you're working.
You may also be kept on as a full-time florist at your employer's premises when your apprenticeship is completed, or you could move on to open up your own florists after completion.

Alternatives to a Floristry Apprenticeship
At East Durham College, we also offer full floristry courses as an alternative to an apprenticeship.
Unlike apprenticeships, you'll be based entirely at the college, where you'll complete your course and gain a full, recognised qualification afterwards.
Students who study floristry at East Durham College learn many different skills, including flower/plant care, different floral arrangements and more. You can also study many optional additional units such as balloon art and functional/event decoration as well as take part in high profile regional and national floristry competitions.
Our Floristry courses take place at our Houghall campus, specialised in land-based studies. Here you'll find dedicated floristry studios, complete with specialist equipment and cool storage that's well stocked with a wide variety of flowers and foliages.
Many of our learners have gone onto full-time employment in the floristry industry, working at garden centres, florists, hotels and wholesalers. Many students also go on to start their own successful floristry businesses.
