What if you could be your own boss and start up your own business? With the support of East Durham College and Durham Works through our Biz-Startup Central project, you could!

Please note that to be eligible for this programme, you must:

  • Live in County Durham
  • Be age 16-24
  • Be unemployed
  • Be thinking of setting up your own business and going self-employed

Setting up your own business can be daunting. Where do I start? How can I finance my business? How do I deal with networking and growing my business? They're all questions you may ask yourself and thanks to East Durham College and Durham Works, the Biz-Startup Central project is here to provide the answers.

What is the Biz-Startup Central Programme?

Biz-Startup Central is a programme for unemployed young people from the County Durham area who have previously gained a level 2 qualification in an occupational area that often enables people to become self-employed. Examples of this include construction, hairdressing, beauty therapy, tree surgery, electrical engineering, floristry and other trades where you have gained skills from your course, but perhaps not the business knowledge you need to set up as your own boss.

As part of the Biz-Startup Central programme, you'll gain valuable experience and advice from professional business staff. The programme covers a range of different topics including Finance for Small Businesses, Business Marketing, Employment Law, Networking and also helps you to build your confidence and improve your presentation and communication skills.

Coaching includes:

  • Business model and plan writing/development
  • Intensive support and assistance with funding - up to £2500 locally and up to £10,000 nationally
  • Finding a gap in the market and identifying your customers
  • MBA level tools and techniques
  • Finances and cash flow

Depending on your area of study, and the type of business you wish to create, you may also receive the opportunity to gain accredited and licence-to-practice qualifications relevant to you.

The programme runs for a minimum of six weeks, one day a week.
