Carpenters and joiners work on new builds, refurbishment, restoration, repair and maintenance of properties, fit and assemble wood to make templates, jigs, scale models and scenic equipment for theatres.

Overview of the course: 

The main focus of the level 2 programme is to develop practical skills needed for industry and enhance underpinning knowledge of relevant industrial processes and techniques. These will be delivered in a workshop environment for practical sessions and classroom based for theory sessions and academic tutorial. also incorporated into the study programme will be functional skills (maths & English), tutorial, work experience, academic tutorial and relevant trips & guest visits.

Entry requirements: 

Completion of a Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery. Additional support will be provided if required. However, a good level of Maths and English would be an advantage. You will be interviewed by course staff and as part of the admissions procedure you will undertake initial assessments in literacy, numeracy and practical skills (unless progressing from level 1).

Topics: 

For this award you will study six units (if you have completed a level). When candidates have passed all six units, they must then pass a phase test and a job knowledge test. The job knowledge test is set externally but completed online at the College. The practical end tests you will undertake in the workshop upon successful completion of the units below.

Units for the qualification consist of:

• Understanding information and communication

• Understanding construction technology

• Carrying out first fixing operations

• Carrying out second fixing operations

• Carrying out structural carcassing

• Carrying out maintenance to carpentry work

How is the course assessed?: 

The programme is assessed via online exams and practical test pieces for each unit.

Fees: 

If you have been a UK resident for the past 3 years and are under the age of 19 on the 31st August, you will not usually need to pay any course fees.

If you are aged 19-23 on the day your main course starts and do not have a level 2 or above qualification you may not have any fees to pay.

If you do have a level 2 or above qualification or you are aged 24 years or over and employed on the day your main course starts fees for this course are payable. However if you are in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group or other work related benefit and you are undertaking this qualification to find work, your fees may be paid by the Government.

If you do need to pay fees they are:

There is a requirement to wear personal protective equipment for this course. The cost of equipment is currently £25. Students with limited income can claim up to 75% of these costs. Further information will be sent to you closer to enrolment in August if you are accepted on to the course.
