College Chosen To Showcase Floristry Skills At National Event
East Durham College’s floristry teaching staff and students have been chosen ahead of a host of other education establishments from around the country to showcase the high quality of floristry education available in the UK.
For the second year running, staff and students from the College’s Houghall Campus, in Durham, will take to the stage at Birmingham’s NEC as part of a three day event: The Skills Show (19th - 21st of November 2015).
Attracting over 80,000 visitors annually, the show provides hands-on experiences that inspire young people to explore careers and motivates them to find more about the world of work. The Skills Show is the nation’s largest event of its type. Many different subject areas are on show from floristry and gaming to forensic science and engineering.
Staff at Houghall had to apply for the chance to take part in the event, which will see them perform demonstrations to members of the public and also working with visitors to provide on-hands tasks, giving visitors the chance to test out their floristry skills.
Floristry lecturer Sue Lee, who took part in last year’s event with another member of staff and three students, hailed their involvement in the event again this year as a great honour.
Sue said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to travel once again to Birmingham to take part in The Skills Show.
“Last year was a brilliant experience for us and the students to go and show off our skills and work with the members of the public from all across the country to showcase floristry education and as a career.
“It’s a great honour to be going back to the show, not only to show off the hard work we do at Houghall but to be ambassadors for organisation who run floristry courses throughout the whole of the country.”
