College Student Picks Up Award After Taking To The Stage

An East Durham College barbering student has received a top regional award, voted for by top local salons.

Georgia Leadbetter, 23, from Seaham won the Best Upcoming Talent award at the Hair Club Live show in Newcastle earlier this week.

The Hair Club Live Open Chair Night event saw staff and students from East Durham College travel to Newcastle’s The Cluny venue, where they took to the stage for a 10-minute demonstration in front of staff from top hair salons and also peers from other college’s around the region.

The aim of the event was to give students the opportunity to show off their skills and the chance to shine in an environment away from the salon.

And out of 16 students that took part in the event, Georgia was selected as the best newcomer on the night.

Georgia was proud to pick up the award but admits it was a huge shock.

Georgia said: “The show was a fantastic experience. I was a bit nervous at first as it was a completely different environment to be working in compared to a salon but I am really glad I took part.

“Being presented with the award at the end of the night was a huge shock, I wasn’t expecting it at all. But it was a very proud moment for me and a huge confidence boost.

“It is a real honour to have your work noticed by industry professionals and I can’t wait to get up on stage again.”

East Durham College barbering lecturer, Alison Scattergood, hailed the night as a huge success and was really proud to see Georgia pick up a deserved award.

Alison said: “The event was a brilliant occasion and a great opportunity to give the students a chance to show off their skills on stage.

“It can be a nerve wracking thing to get up on a stage and show off the skills you have learned to an audience of professionals, especially as a student, but the team we took up were fantastic.

“This is a great award for Georgia to have win and we were really proud to see go up to collect it; she’s worked really hard on her course and I hope to see her up on stage at another event soon.”
