County Call-Up for EDC Rugby Superstars

It's one step closer to the dream of being a professional rugby player for three talented sportsmen from East Durham College - Shane Ivey, Sam Pickering and Zac Ivey have all received county-level call-ups after excelling on the pitch.

Sam, who is the captain of East Durham College's rugby team also plays for Durham City. After his call-up, Sam has played for Durham County Under 20's on Wednesday 20th September vs Durham University. Sam is also East Durham College's student president.

Shane plays for Hartlepool RFC and Newcastle Falcons Under 18's. Shane was previously captain of the county at Under 16 level last year and has now been called up to play for the Durham County Under 18's squad.

Zac Ivey, who plays for Hartlepool RFC, has been called up the county Under 18's training squad. Zac recently made his 1st XV debut for Hartlepool RFC this previous weekend in the side's victory against Newton Aycliffe.

Craig Gilmour, who is the head rugby coach at East Durham College is extremely happy with the news. He said: "All three of these talented young players have done fantastic to receive county call-ups. They work extremely hard in training at all times and are very talented rugby players - it's very well deserved and I hope they go on to even more success in rugby in the future.!

East Durham College is a leading provider of rugby tuition, giving students the facilities they need to grow as rugby players. The college recently partnered with Durham University to offer students access to the facilities at Durham Universities' sports centre, Maiden Castle, as well as offering students expert tuition and training from Durham University's Senior Rugby Coach, Alex Keay.
