Floristry Students Show Off Skills At National Show
East Durham College floristry students have been showing off their skills to over 90,000 visitors at a national skills competition in Birmingham.
Students Naomi Foy, Kate Stokoe and Zoe Blythyn travelled to the NEC in Birmingham with floristry department staff to put on demonstrations and workshops to visitors at the recent WorldSkills UK competition.
The annual event saw students from around the country competing in events in a number of vocational skills areas including woodwork, floristry, automotive, landscape gardening and nail art amongst many others.
The winners from these competitions then go on to represent Team UK at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi in 2017.
And for each competition skills area, a college from around the UK was invited to demonstrate and interact with the public attending the three day event, this is where East Durham College’s Houghall team came in.
Floristry lecturer at East Durham College, Sue Lee, praised the team of students who joined her at the event and hopes the college have the opportunity to do it again in the future.
Sue said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for us, not only to go and show off our skills here at East Durham College but to also show the huge number of visitors at the event the fun you can have learning floristry skills.
“The three students we took with us to the event were fantastic and worked non-stop on the long days at the event.
“They were great ambassadors for floristry education in this country.
“This is the second time that we have taken part in this role at the event and we hope we have the opportunity to do it again in the future.”
