Gareth Adds More Medals To Impressive Collection

A talented East Durham College student has picked up three medals after competing in the pool at a Special Olympics event.

Gareth Orr, 22, from Shotton Colliery, recently competed at the Special Olympics North West Regional Swimming Gala 2016 in Liverpool were he came away with a gold medal in 100m Butterfly, a gold medal in 50m Freestyle and a silver medal in 100m Individual Medley.

He also got personal best times in both his IM and Freestyle swims at the gala.

Gareth was proud of his achievements and glad to get two PBs along with his medals.

Gareth said: “I really enjoyed the gala at Liverpool.

“It was great to win the three medals, and I was really happy to get two new personal best times in freestyle and IM.”

East Durham College, student support team member, Angela Steerment added: “This is another great achievement for Gareth.

“He’s a great student here at the college and he obviously has a real talent in the pool. 

“We are all really proud of him and what he has achieved both in and out the pool this year.”

Gareth Orr joined the college back in January 2015 after moving to the north east from Peterborough, enrolling on the college’s Foundation Studies programme.
