Hair & Beauty Team Picks Up Eight Awards At AHT Regional Finals

Students and staff from East Durham College’s hair and beauty department were celebrating yesterday as they picked up an impressive eight medals at the AHT regional finals 2017.

The team travelled with high hopes to Gateshead’s Federation Brewery for the annual inter-college event, which sees college students from across the region compete against each other in a range of different hairdressing, barbering, beauty and make-up disciplines.

This year’s event saw East Durham College students compete against 12 other north east colleges from as far south as York.

So, the East Durham team were absolutely thrilled to walk off with three first place gold medals, three silvers, a bronze and the inaugural Bobby Mukabaa ‘Fabulous Darling’ memorial award.

The first place wins went to Abbey Johnson (Ladies Evening Hair), Laura Burnham (Gents Long Hair Finish) and Natalie Lofthouse (Nail Art). Alison Scattergood and the EDC Barbering studnets group

Craig Harman (Gents Commercial), Joleen Hope (Fantasy) and Tyler Thirwell Johnson (Face Painting) won silvers, with Charlotte Quinn and Laurie Borgesson taking bronze in the Team Bridal category.

The Bobby Mukabaa memorial award, named in honour of the legendary Jesmond-based ‘hairdresser to the stars’, who sadly past away last year following a distressing battle with cancer, went to EDC level 2 hairdressing student Abbey Johnson.

East Durham College hairdressing lecturer Angela Johnston was delighted with the team’s performance and the professional way they prepared and competed at the prestigious event.

Angela said: “2017 saw another fantastic performance by the East Durham team.

“Every single one of our students who took part should be incredibly proud of their performance and the professionalism they showed in both preparing and taking part in this fiercely fought competition.

“Competition is an integral part of the training our students receive, preparing them for the world-of-work by helping to build their confidence, resilience and self-belief.

“I would like to congratulate everyone that took part and especially the winners who now progress on to the national finals in Blackpool where they will be up against other regional winners from colleges right across Britain.”

The team is now busy planning and preparing for the AHT National Finals 2017 which will be held at Blackpool’s famous Winter Gardens on 13th March.
