C&G Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector (Hair)
After successful completion of the course you will have an awareness of the skills and requirements needed to progress onto the Level 2 Hairdressing qualification.
This qualification is intended to provide an understanding of the basic hairdressing vocational skills and knowledge required to work in the hairdressing industry. Hairdressing skills will be developed through working on mannequin heads and clients throughout the styling, colouring, cutting and perming skills schemes. It will also provide an awareness of the range of jobs and work settings and enable candidates to make informed decisions about careers in the sector.
All applicants will be interviewed and cover an initial assessment in a hairdressing related task. The required literacy and numeracy skills are Entry level 3 or working towards a level 1 qualification. Learners under 19 years of age will need to complete functional skills or GCSE depending on qualifications already achieved.
Thirteen units must be completed to pass the course. Shampoo and conditioning. Create an image using colour for the hair & beauty sector. Introduction to the hair & beauty sector. Presenting a professional image in a salon. Styling women's hair. Styling men's hair. Plaiting and twisting hair. Create a hair & beauty image. Follow health and safety in the salon. Salon reception duties. Working with others in the hair & beauty sector. The art of dressing hair. The art of colouring hair.
There will be a combination of theory, covering the underpinning knowledge required, and training in the required skills to underpin practical competence. Candidates are required to complete practical assessments which are graded at pass, credit or distinction. Functional skills are required and are an essential part of this qualification.
Candidates will work in salon sessions on mannequin head and on clients, etc. to practice competency regarding assessment criteria.
A one year programme in which knowledge is assessed via practical and written assignments. Evidence is generated and presented in a portfolio.

If you have been a UK resident for the past 3 years and are under the age of 19 on the 31st August, you will not usually need to pay any course fees.
If you are aged 19+ years old you may be required to pay fees for your course, however if you are in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group or other work related benefit and you are undertaking this qualification to find work, your fees may be paid by the Government.
Learners under 25 years old with a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan will not pay fees.

City & Guilds Group Bursaries
City & Guilds Group Bursaries are available to learners starting or completing a City & Guilds or ILM qualification, starting courses on or after 1st September 2017.
To qualify learners need to be able to
- Demonstrate genuine financial need that would otherwise prevent them from completing their chosen qualification
- Be over 19 years old
- Be a UK resident.
Bursaries range from £200 to £10,000 and can cover any costs that arise as a result of the learner undertaking a City & Guilds or ILM qualification.
