National Finals Beckon For Top Barbers

Big weekend ahead. (Pictured L-R): Barbering student Maxine Walker, East Durham College Barbering Lecturer Alison Scattergood and Barbering Student Orianne Million.

Students and staff from East Durham College’s barbering team are getting set to battle it out at a top national competition this weekend.

Two students, Maxine Walker, 26, from Trimdon and Orianne Million, 18, from Sedgefield along with their lecturer Alison Scattergood, have beaten off stiff competition from hundreds of other entries from over 80 colleges around Great Britain to reach the finals of the 2014 Barber Connect Competitions being held at The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales on Sunday 25th May.

Maxine and Orianne have qualified for the final 10 in their respective competition categories, Maxine in the Men’s Styling Category and Orianne in the Trends Category.

Not to be outdone by her prodigies, lecturer Alison has also bagged a place in the top four to compete in the Master’s Category, which will see her go head-to-head with her rivals performing shaving patterns in a real boxing ring.

And to top of the individual success, East Durham College has also been nominated in the top three colleges for the Best Overall College Category.

This continues what has already been a stellar year for the College’s Hair and Beauty department, which has already seen them pick up a number of awards and be named Best Overall College at the Regional AHT awards in Gateshead. With the team then going on to pick up a number of top medals at the National AHT Awards in Blackpool.

Barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood said: “It’s brilliant to have students once again selected in the Barber Connect Competitions this year.

“It’s an amazing achievement and a great event to be a part of, both for me and the students.

“Hopefully they will gain some great competition experience from being part of the event.

“Fingers crossed we come back with some good results and cap off what has been a fantastic year for the department.”
