Sarah Gets Top Marks And High Praise

East Durham College student Sarah Mawson was thrilled to win the Animal Care Award at the College’s recent student of the month awards ceremony.

Sarah, aged 18, from Langley Park is studying on the Level 3 Diploma in Animal Care course at the College’s Houghall Campus in Durham.

In her first year she achieved a distinction in each unit of the course and is on track to also gain top grades across the board in the last year of her course.

John Reid, Head of Animal Care, said: “Sarah is very deserving of this award. She shows great determination to complete every aspect of the course to the very highest level. She has also excelled on her work placements.”

Sarah, who plans to go on to university next year and ultimately become a veterinary nurse, added: “I really enjoy the practical side of the course and the fact you get to work with such a wide range of animals – which are all very different – it gives you a great experience.”

As part of her workplace on the course, Sarah spent three weeks at Ashfield Veterinary Surgery, in Lanchester, where a highlight was assisting in resuscitating a lamb born after a caesarean section.

She also got to spend two weeks at Cestria Vets, in Chester-le-Street, and three weeks at Oakwood Stables in Lanchester.

Pauline Dodds, from Oakwood, commented: “We can only speak very highly of Sarah, she would be an asset to any employer. It is nice to see a young person with as much enthusiasm and common sense, who is polite and has a great personality.”

John added: “Sarah should be very proud of herself, she is a great ambassador and a credit to the College.”
