Scene1 Raises Money For Breast Cancer

Staff and students from East Durham College, in Peterlee, have raised over £200 for Breast Cancer Research UK.

Scene1, the College’s restaurant, recently held a Mother’s Day Sunday Lunch event, which catered for over 100 diners on the day. The money was raised by the team selling raffle tickets, in the run up to and, at the lunch with the prize being a special spice cake. The cake was made by hospitality and catering students Terri-Ann Stephenson (aged 17 from Wingate) and Shannon Rutter (aged 17 from Peterlee).

The cheque for £206 was presented last night to Mrs Janet Brown and Mrs Olwen Henshall by Sharon Flower the Programme Leader for Food Services at the College.

Mrs Brown, Treasurer for the Peterlee branch of Cancer Research UK, said: “Thanks for your fantastic effort and I would like to say a big thank you for this kind and generous donation to a very worthy cause. Can I also thank the staff at Scene1 for making us so welcome and treating us to a special evening”.

Mrs Henshall, who recently recovered from breast cancer, added: “I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Scene1 staff. Thank you to everyone who donated to help raise this fantastic amount. If it wasn’t for peoples’ generosity helping to fund research I may not have been here to enjoy life. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart”.

Sharon Flower said: “The Students all put in a fantastic effort to the Mother’s Day event and helping with the fundraising, I was extremely proud of them. Having lost six family members to breast cancer it was our first choice to donate the money to this great charity.
