Student Brings Home World Championship Titles

An East Durham College sport student has returned home with two world championship medals in Thai boxing after only taking up the sport two years ago.

Leigh Newton, 16, from Wheatley Hill, has just returned from representing the England team at the WKA World Championships in Tuscany, Italy.

After qualifying through a national competition in Birmingham earlier this year, Leigh, who trains at Lampang Camp in Thornley, joined up with other members of the team to represent England at the finals.

Leigh, who studies on a sports studies course at East Durham College in Peterlee, only took up the sport two years ago - and not only did she manage to battle her way to first place in her weight category at the finals, she also picked up gold in a second discipline, K1.

The teenager was ecstatic to bring the medals home after the hard work she had put into the sport over the last couple of years.

Leigh said: “Just to get to the World Championships was a fantastic opportunity. It was great being part of the England team and going out there to compete on behalf of my country.

“I have worked really hard over the past couple of years and it’s great to have come so far in such a short period of time.

“It was a huge moment for me to win both the medals and a really exciting time.

“I am really proud to have brought these medals home and I look forward now to continue to work hard and improve in the sport both with Lampang Camp and with the help of the boxing coaches here at the College.”
