East Durham College students register to vote in general election

Students Meet Deadline To Register For General Election

East Durham College students are been encouraged to make their voices heard by registering to vote.

Today is the final deadline for members of the public to register to vote at next month’s general election to be held on 7th May 2015.

Anyone wishing to vote must be registered by midnight on Monday or they will not be able to.

There are still an estimated 7.5 million people who haven’t registered to vote in the UK.

The College held a special event in the Peterlee Campus atrium with games and activities, along with giving out information on the importance to vote.

A number of computers and tablets were on-hand ready to help students sign up on the government website.

East Durham College Student Liaison Officer Jamie Calford, hailed the event a huge success and hoped students had realised how important their vote could be.

Jamie said: “Making sure your vote counts is a huge thing.

“I think many students hadn’t realised the importance of this and that’s why we wanted them to make sure they came along to register before tonight’s deadline so they could make their opinions count on 7th May.

“We had a large number of students come along asking questions about the election and signing up to vote for the first time, which was great to see.”

If you still want to register to vote you have until 23.59 on Monday 20th April by visiting https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
