Top Barber MK Aims To Help Bridge The Gap

One of the nation’s top barbers is heading to East Durham College to host an event aimed at bridging the gap between education and employers.

Renowned barber Mucktaru Kargbo, known as MK, who runs his own hair studio and academy in London, is putting on a show at the Peterlee campus’s Lubetkin Theatre on Tuesday 2nd February between 5.30pm-8.30pm.

The event, Bridging The Gap, is aimed at both barbering students and barbering employers across the north east, in an aim to make better connections between the two groups within the region.

During the event MK will also be putting on special demonstrations, showing off his own unique styles and techniques which he has been honing for 20 years.

MK has worked at shows throughout Europe and also featured on TV shows such as Blue Peter, and is an ambassador for respected institutions, the Hair Council, the National Hairdressers’ Federation and also City and Guilds.

MK is excited about holding the event at the college and wants to champion the hard work done by education establishments training the next generation of barbers.

MK said: “I can’t wait to hold this event at the college’s Peterlee campus. I have visited the site a couple of times now and it’s a great venue, we have some exciting ideas for the night.

“With this event we are aiming to showcase the fantastic work that is being done in barbering education at places such as East Durham College, and show the local barbering employers that there is some great talent on their doorsteps who are ready to come into their salons and work on clients.

“Employers need to see how important official barbering qualifications are, but also we need these employers to give students positive work placements as they will further help the students talents to grow.

“It should be a great night and I can’t wait to meet the brilliant members of the barbering community from around the north east.”

East Durham College barbering lecturer, Alison Scattergood added: “It’s absolutely fantastic to have MK coming here to East Durham College to put on this show.

“I have worked with him before and he is a brilliant talent, full of unique ideas.

“He is really passionate about the education side of barbering, and is always keen to promote the hard work that is done by education providers throughout the country.

“This should be a fantastic night for all in attendance, we can’t wait.”
