Animal Care student Cara Coatsworth receives her prize from East Durham College vice principal Graeme Blench

Top Maths & English Skills Call for Great Prizes

Two hard-working East Durham College students are the proud owners of new iPhones after impressing with their Maths and English skills.

As part of a government initiative, all students that arrive at college with a grade D in GSCE Maths and/or English must now continue to study towards a GSCE in those subjects to strive for a grade C or above - as this is an important factor in improving someone’s chances of gaining employment after college.

So, to encourage the students to work as hard as possible towards their mocks earlier in the year, East Durham College decided to run a competition where every student that improved their score by 5 percentage points from their September test, would be entered into a Prize Draw for the chance to win one of two iPhone 6s.

The two winners were, level 2 sport student, Jake Christie, 16, from Murton and Cara Coatsworth, 19, from Newton Aycliffe who studies level 3 animal care.

Cara was delighted to win the prize, but was also proud of her progression in her Maths and English over the last year.

Cara said: “This is a great prize and I can’t believe that I was the winner.

“I have worked really hard this year to improve my Maths and English skills and I love my animal care course here at Houghall.

"I can’t wait to continue to keep improving into my final year next year.”

East Durham College, programme area leader for GCSE English & Maths, Uzma Rana, added: “Congratulations to both students on winning this fantastic prize from the college.

“They have both worked really hard on their maths and English across this year and this prize is very well deserved.

“There could have been a number of recipients for this prize across this year at the college, as we have seen some brilliant results and improvements in Maths and English during the past year.”
