15 Awesome Reasons to Study at East Durham College
Thu, 2017-09-28 16:48
Of course, we’re a bit biased, but we happen to think East Durham College is one of the very finest places in the area to study.
If you’re debating going off to college after you’ve finished school, fancy a change of career and are looking for a course or are just weighing up your options on what to do next, considering a move to EDC should be top of your list.
Why, you ask? Well, let us tell you!
15 – Fuelled by Starbucks
We know our students love great coffee (who doesn’t?) – that’s why we’ve partnered up with the coffee-chain Starbucks to make sure we proudly serve a selection of their finest beverages at The Hatch down in the foyer at our Peterlee campus.
So, if you’ve got a bit of downtime between your lessons, pop along with your chums for a cuppa, a grande, a frappucino, a slice of cake, a cookie, a scone or whatever else you fancy (go on, you deserve it!).
14 – Acing A-Levels
Thinking about studying A-Levels? A fine choice!
What you may not know is that East Durham College’s sixth form, ED6, has for the past two years had a 100% pass rate for A-Levels thanks to our hard-working students and awesome knowledge of our ED6 staff.
We’ve got loads of A-Levels to choose from too – hit the link to have a look!
13 – FREE Bus Travel!
Worried about getting to college? With EDC, you don’t have to!
We have partnered with Arriva to offer free bus travel to and from college for our students (makes life a bit easier, doesn’t it?).
Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that your bus service will fly.
12 – Oh Hey, Houghall!
Did you know East Durham College actually has three campuses? You’ll likely be familiar with our campus in Peterlee, but we also have a campus in the middle of Durham too!
Houghall is the place where you’ll go to study land-based courses – so if you’re thinking of doing things such as animal care, agriculture, horticulture (fancy word for gardening and related things) and other land-related courses, you’ll find all the facilities you need to study these at the Houghall Campus.
It’s also recently undergone a multi-million-pound redevelopment so it’s even better than ever! You’ll now find all of the following at Houghall:
476-acre estate with working farm, purpose-built animal care centre, commercial dog grooming salon, specialist veterinary nursing training facilities, 22-bay dog kennel unit, dog agility and exercise area, agriculture centre with pig and cattle unit with forage store, equine centre with 28 stables, training workshops, tack room, all-weather ménage and international standard 40 x 40m indoor arena and so much more!
Not too shabby, eh?
11 – The Finest Cuisine
School dinners are horrible, just like the one above, right? Wrong – EDC’s are top quality.
Headed up by our master caterers using fresh meat and produce sourced from our Houghall Campus, we offer great meals for equally great costs. If you’re eligible, we also offer free meals for students aged 16-18 too!
As we’re writing this, they’re serving up corned beef pie, spring rolls and even chicken parmos. Hang on – we’ll just have to pop down and grab something…
10 – A Bit of Pampering
Overseen by our master hairdressers, barbers and beauty professionals, our Salon is open to the public and students for haircuts, manicures, massages and more!
If you’re coming along to study hairdressing or beauty, you’ll work in The Salon and get to try out your new skills on members of the public too.
Perfect for prepping you for working at a salon or starting your own business.
9 – Vocational Courses Galore
A-Levels not for you? No problem – we’ve got plenty of vocational courses to throw yourself into instead!
