Do you love sport? With East Durham College's sport scholarship programmes, available in Boxing, Football and Rugby Union, you can learn from the very best, take advantage of amazing facilities and start your career in sport.

Do you think you've got the potential to go far in sport? Potential stars of the future can apply for a place at the College's unique Sports Scholarship programme.

Made to support athletes that may have just missed out, or slipped through the net at a professional club, East Durham College's sport scholarships provide you with an incredible package of incentives and support, combined together with expert coaching and guidance from EDC's specialist coaching team of ex-professionals in your chosen sport.

Our sport scholarship programme is based between EDC's Peterlee Campus and the Houghall Campus in Durham. First launched in 2011, we've helped bright sporting stars across the region realise their full potential for almost a decade.

Am I Eligible for a Sports Scholarship at East Durham College?

To be eligible to apply for the sports scholarship at EDC, you must be aged 16-17 on or before the 1st September.

You must be currently playing in your chosen sport at county level or above; if you are, selection for the EDC Sports Scholarship programme will then be done via a trial.

As education is an important part of a sporting career too, you must have, or be on course to get, four GCSEs at grade 4-5 too.

What Can I Expect on the Sports Scholarship Programme?

As one of the region's leading sport centres, East Durham College is the perfect place to pursue your dream of a career in sport.

If you are successful at applying for the sports scholarship programme, you will be enrolled on to a Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport course. This course will run for a possible 2 years, with the option for you to then continue on to the Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) which is equivalent to three A Levels. Those on the scholarship programme will also be eligible to gain sports coaching and officiating awards.

You can also expect to receive further training in a wide variety of disciplines relating to sport, including sports nutrition, performance analysis, sports science and psychology.

At EDC, you'll learn from the very best coaching staff. Many of our team are ex-professional players or have made long, successful careers in the sporting industry. They know how to get the very best out of you, and thanks to our partnerships with leading sporting institutions from across the region, we have all of the facilities and links you need to succeed.

Students on the scholarship programme also get access to the college's in-house pysiotherapy service and prehabiliation training to help you to avoid sport injuries, or to speed up your recovery.

Another major bonus is that we work in partnership with Durham University increasing the opportunities available to our scholarship students to progress on to Durham.

A Message from Our Principal

The College Principal said: “We wanted to create a scholarship that would attract, and reward, the best of the region’s young elite athletes and provide them with an excellent opportunity to develop their sporting skills and performance - whist still getting a qualification.

“There are only 20 places available for football and 20 for rugby - so this really is an exclusive programme.”
