Accountancy Apprenticeship

Interested in accountancy, but don't think the traditional university route might be for you? With an apprenticeship in accountancy, you could get your start in this job role.

At East Durham College, we'll be able to help you with finding an accountancy apprenticeship right here in the North East. Firms from across our region are in regular need of accountants, and many will offer accountancy apprenticeships to help train up new accountants.

What Will I Be Doing on an Accountancy Apprenticeship?

The actual type of work you'll be doing may vary depending on the job role you're offered, and the business sector you find yourself working in. Generally an accountant apprentice will work on a variety of financial activities, ranging from a businesses' bills and expenses to the companies' payroll and taxes. Your role may expand or change as you progress further along your apprenticeship.

Your apprenticeship will help you to gain actual, real working experience of being in a businesses' accountancy team. You'll work alongside qualified accountants who will be expected to act as mentors for you - these staff members will train you in the different tasks you'll be doing, with the aim of you working towards a recognised accountancy qualification. At the same time, you'll also be supported by East Durham College, and may be expected to attend the college for further training as and when needed during your apprenticeship.

What Types of Accountancy Apprenticeship are Available?

In accountancy, there are three levels of accountancy available. These are:

  • Intermediate (Level 2) Accountancy Apprenticeship: this qualification is equivalent to a GCSE grade, and could include roles such as accounts assistant/clerk, cashier, finance assistant and sales ledger clerk
  • Advanced (Level 3) Accountancy Apprenticeship: this higher-level qualification is equivalent to A-levels, and covers roles such as an assistant accountant or trainee accounting technician
  • Higher Apprenticeship (Levels 4-7)/Degree (Levels 6 and 7) - if you've already got significant experience or high grades at A Levels, you may be eligible for a higher apprenticeship, which can be equivalent to a foundation degree or above. With this qualification, you could move into roles such as an accounts manager or accounts technician after your apprenticeship

The actual level you'll be able to apply for will depend on your previous qualifications and abilities.
