East Durham College student Alex Bagher has been rewarded for his hard work on his sports course by Sunderland AFC.

Alex joined the College as part of a link up with the Sunderland AFC charity the SAFC Foundation of Light.

The partnership sees Alex spend half of the week coaching in the community on placement with The Black Cat’s Foundation and the other half working at East Durham College studying towards his Diploma in Sport.

And last Thursday Alex was rewarded for his hard work at the SAFC Foundation Top Scorer Awards, picking up the Future Workforce Award.

Alex was presented with the award by Chief Executive of Northumbria Water Heidi Mottram and Sunderland AFC midfielder Stephane Sessegnon at a ceremony at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

Alex was proud of his award and praised both East Durham College and SAFC for the fantastic experience he has picked up through the course.

Alex said: “It has been a great experience both at East Durham College and with Sunderland.

“I feel I have learnt and benefited from both my academic studies and my placement with the Foundation.

“I’m going to continue on to the next academic year and I hope to benefit more by achieving my FA Level 2 Coaching Award and completing the 120 Credit Diploma in Sport.”

Jamie Wright, Head of Football Development at SAFC Foundation of Light praised Alex for the commitment to the course and also the progression he has made since joining.

Jamie said: “Alex has been a great addition to the coaching team here at the Foundation of Light.

“Alex has progressed through nearly every stage of our coaches pathway from - Participant to Volunteer to Trainee which is fantastic and shows Alex’s commitment to developing himself.

“Winning this award further justifies Alex’s development and the hard work he has put into becoming a coach.”
