An art student has been praised for her effort and talent at a recent student awards ceremony.

Amy Holmes, aged 17 from Peterlee, was one of 10 students who recently picked up a Student of the Month Award at East Durham College.

Amy joined the College from St Bede’s Catholic Comprehensive Schools to study on an Art & Design Subsidiary Diploma Level 3, which she started in September and she has never looked back.

Amy said: “Before coming to East Durham I tried a number of creative based A Levels but found the courses a bit restrictive.

“The Diploma course is really good fun. It gives me loads of creative freedom to work the way I want, to express myself. I particularly enjoy the drawing aspect of the course, but I also love to get messy when I’m producing artwork.

“It’s just great to get an idea out of your head and see it come to life on paper or in a three dimensional form.

Amy is not totally sure what career she ultimately wants to pursue but is very interested in looking into creative art therapy.

Art Lecturer Lynn Barlow added: “Amy is a smashing student. She’s a very diligent worker. She has just completed a 3D figure project in which she has given 100% to her drawings, research, materials, techniques and evaluations.

“She enjoyed all aspects of the making process using materials such as paper, straws, wire, plasticine, mesh and junk. She has analysed the properties of the materials and found ways to solve problems.

“Amy is highly motivated and tries really hard to be creative. An ideal art student!”
