A local student with big ambitions has set her sights on raising enough money so that she can complete a work experience placement overseas.
Shonie Piggford, aged 18 from Burnhope in Durham, is currently enrolled on an Animal Care course at East Durham College’s Houghall Campus and is hoping to further her education and practical experience through a work placement in the USA.
Shonie has managed to secured herself a 3-week placement in a conservation centre in North Carolina and now needs to raise around £2,000 to help her get there.
In order to raise the money Shonie has organised numerous fundraising activities including bag packing at local supermarkets, cakes sales and putting her wage from her Saturday job into the trip fund. Her next plan is to organise a big night at the races, with the help of family and friends.
Talking about her plans Shonie said: “I’m really nervous at the thought of going but I know it’s a once in a lifetime experience that I don’t want to miss out on.
“The fundraising has been difficult but hopefully I’ll get there in the end.”
John Walshaw, an Animal Care Lecturer at the College, added: “Shonie started with us on a Level 2 course and quickly progressed on to Level 3 with her great attitude and determination. She is a smashing practical student with great attendance and heaps of enthusiasm.
“She showed great interest in visiting the US and the College has been here to help her achieve that, although she’s shown great initiative in finding the placement herself and coming up with ideas to help raise the money.
“It will be a fabulous experience for her and I wish her well in both her fundraising and her placement.”
