Two engineering apprentices are set to start new roles with a major local engineering provider whilst studying their qualifications with East Durham College.

Martin Clutterbuck, 21, from Langley Park & Adisorn Khampan, 18, from Ingleby Barwick, have joined DPE Automotive, based in Newton Aycliffe, on engineering tool making apprenticeships after a thorough selection process across the summer.

This process marked the first apprentices to join DPE Automotive whilst studying at East Durham College with staff from DPE praising the quality of applicants brought forward for the roles by the college.

Michael Dockerty, HR Manager from DPE Automotive said: “The quality of the candidates East Durham College put forward for the two apprenticeships that we were offering, made the selection process very hard, but the two lads that were successful have fit straight into our team of toolmakers.

“Under the guidance of Toolroom manager Steve Devlin, they are at the beginning of a 4 year apprenticeship and learning program where upon succession they will become fully skilled toolmakers within the press tool & die maintenance sector of our business.”

And staff at the college are hoping this can be the start of a future partnership with more local students benefiting between this education and work place connection.

Emma Norbury, Business Development Advisor, at East Durham College said: “It’s great to see Adisorn and Martin get these apprenticeship roles with DPE Automotive.

“There was a very high calibre of apprentices applied for the role and all performed highly during the recruitment process.

“It is great for the college to work alongside DPE on this and hopefully this will be the start of a long partnership that helps to give further opportunities to local people within the engineering sector.”

East Durham College has a number of apprenticeship courses available from beauty and hairdressing to Engineering to customer service, there is something for everyone.
