Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle

Love cars and great with your hands? A motor vehicle apprenticeship is an excellent route to get started as a professional mechanic.

Motor vehicle apprenticeships deal with the repair and maintenance of all types of vehicles. Whether it's mopeds or lorries, there are 32 million vehicles on the UK's roads, which means that there's always demand for skilled motor vehicle technicians to keep them roadworthy.

As an apprentice, you could work for a dealership and focus on a particular manufacturer, or work for an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles. In both, you’ll choose your area of specialisation, whether that’s motorcycles, cars, heavy vehicles or vehicle electrical systems. You’ll be working in a service technician type role, carrying out routine maintenance and basic repairs, as well as identifying and reporting faults.

On the Advanced Apprenticeship, you’ll learn about more complex faults and how to identify and repair them using sophisticated diagnostic equipment.

About the Apprenticeship

Vehicle repair is challenging, hands-on work – every vehicle will present a new problem to solve. You’ll also need good communication skills in order to explain everything to the customer. But you’ll feel satisfied when the job’s done and that car is back on the road.

As part of an Apprenticeship you will cover a mixture of practical and theory and you will be required to come into college on day release. You will also take part in observations. As part of the apprenticeship framework you will be required to complete functional skills in Maths & English. If you have GCSE grade C or above in Maths & English or equivalent within the last 5 years then you may be released from your functional skills.

You will be assessed throughout the course, during workplace observations and also observed within college day release.
