Former Houghall student Rebecca Hough is set to be part of the Interflora exhibition at this year's Chelsea Flower Show 2014.

An award-winning florist from east Durham has been selected to design part of an exhibit at a prestigious flower show.

Rebecca Hough, 25, of Peterlee, is one of five florists from around the country selected to help with Interflora’s exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London.

Ms Hough has been working in floristry for over four years and during this time she studied at East Durham College’s Houghall Campus for her Level 2 in floristry, gaining a distinction, after this she went on to study a level 3 qualification, gaining another distinction.

In 2013 she won Interflora’s Florist of the Future and won a silver medal in the RHS Young Chelsea Florist competition. She also won first place and best in show for the past two years at the Harrogate Flower Show and competed as part of East Durham College team at RHS Tatton Park where they won best in show.

Alongside her work as a florist, Ms Hough works for Interflora as the training and assessment consultant for the North-East, training and inducting new members.

She is now back at the Houghall Campus working towards her teaching qualifications and hopes that she can pass on her skills, knowledge and experiences to inspire others to explore floristry.

Ms Hough will be helping work on the design of the suspended wire frames on Interflora’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014 exhibit.

The florists have been given a colour palette of pinks, oranges and yellows to work with and these colours will be carried in the flowers, accessories and other decorative features that the florists choose to work with.

All the frames will be unique and individual in appearance and hung around the elliptical canopy in succession. Common threads will link all the frames together giving the exhibit a “clean, fresh cohesive appearance”.

The team will be mentored by RHS Chelsea gold medal-winning Interflora florist David Ragg.

The flower show will be held from Tuesday May 20 to Saturday May 24.
