It’s another accolade for East Durham College’s extremely talented barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood who was officially made an Industry Advisory Board Member for Barbering by City & Guilds this week.
As a board member, Alison will be shaping the way barbering is taught in the UK for years to come. City & Guilds board members help to shape their strategy and product design, adapting education in the barbering, beauty, nails, spa, media make-up and hair sectors to move with modern innovations and styles.
As described on the City & Guilds award criteria, Alison will: ‘Provide an important consultative Industry Expert Service to City & Guilds’, will ‘Enhance the profile of the hair/beauty industry in association with City & Guilds’ and ‘support City & Guilds when scoping qualification content.’
Alison was thrilled to receive the position and said: “I’m so proud to have received this news today. I work with some of the best in our business and I feel very privileged to be part of the City & Guilds industry board.”
Alison has a long and illustrious career in the barbering and hair sector. Having been diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer named Retinoblastoma as a child and losing one of her eyes, Alison has not let her past hold her back and has gained an impressive host of awards and accolades for her hard work in the industry.
Last year, Alison was crowned Further Education Teacher of the Year at the TES Awards 2018, winning against other exceptional teaching candidates from across the UK.
Alison already holds another title with City & Guilds too – she was named as a City & Guilds and Men’s Hair Federation (MHFed) Technical Ambassador for Education in 2016.
In 2014, Alison was made the first-ever female Master Barber by the British Master Barber’s Alliance, joining a small group of top barbers who have been awarded the honour.
Alison also appears on stage regularly at different events, demonstrating cutting and styling on models while educating attendees.
Despite her successes, Alison’s true passion lies in teaching the next generation of barbers. Her students consistently thank her for her training at the college, and many of her students have had outstanding success in barbering competitions across the UK because of their time with Alison at East Durham College.
