Barbers Pick Up Awards At National Event
Top Performers: Barbering student Orianne Million, Barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood and Barbering student Maxine Walker.
A small team from the barbering department at East Durham College have picked up awards at a prestigious national barbering competition.
Last week, Barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood travelled to the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales for the Barber Connect 2014 event along with college barbering students Orianne Million and Maxine Walker.
Orianne, 18, from Sedgefield, and Maxine, 26, from Trimdon, had beaten off competition from hundreds of other entries from over 80 other colleges around the country to make the finals. They then competed in the final 10 of their respective competition categories; Orianne in the trends category and Maxine in the men’s styling category.
And Orianne pushed herself that one step further making the top three in her category, bringing home a trophy and £200 worth of barbering products.
The event also saw lecturer Alison Scattergood recognised for her hard work with East Durham College when the Men’s Hairdressing Federation promoted her from the gold to platinum certificate.
Orianne and Maxine both hailed the weekend as a fantastic experience.
Orianne said: “The whole weekend was great. We had a brilliant time networking with other people in the industry and met some very high profile people from the barbering world who were happy to talk to us and offer us some advice on our future careers.
“To finish third in the competition was also a massive achievement for me and really topped off a fantastic weekend.”
Maxine added: “Barber Connect was a brilliant event. To have the opportunity to meet so many fascinating people, with a wealth of experience in barbering, was a real inspiration.”
And lecturer Alison said: “It was a brilliant weekend and great to be part of it.
“The girls did fantastic in the competitions and the weekend gave them a great opportunity to meet and get tips from some huge names in the barbering world such as Simon Shaw.
“On a personal level, it was a huge honour to be awarded the platinum certificate for my work with the College.”
