Former East Durham College student Paul Archer is set for “big things” according to his boxing coach Dave Binns and promoter Phil Jeffries.

Binns, who was in the corner for Glenn Foot’s recent Prizefighter win, knows that he has some real talent coming from his Peterlee base of East Durham College.

Archer, 22, will star on the Jeffries-promoted show at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring on February 15 - and Binns knows it can be the start of something good for the youngster.

Binns said: “Paul has a lot to learn and will keep progressing, a lot like Glenn.

“He has had a difficult start to his professional career but hopefully this year can be really good for him. I want him to be busy, and I am certain that Paul does as well, so hopefully he will get a chance to shine in 2013.

“He can go as far as he likes really. He eats, drinks and sleeps the sport of boxing so he really is going to go on to big things. Hopefully that love for the sport continues and he keeps progressing as a boxer.”

Easington-man Archer has spoken of his desire to fight more competitive boxers where he can improve his unbeaten record.

With six wins from as many contests in the professional game, promoter Jeffries is excited about his prospects.

He said: “Paul is probably one of the best fighters around the North-East. I know a lot of people have a lot of time for him and he can go for big things in the future.

“He was gutted when his fight was called off in December (against Joe Hughes in Liverpool) but that is boxing. He will have to be patient and wait for his opportunity - then show everyone what he is capable of.”

Paul Archer was a student at East Durham College until 2011, after which he progressed on to the University of Sunderland to complete his sports degree.

Paul was also part of the College’s highly successful boxing academy during his time at EDC.
