Gearing up for the finals - (L-R) East Durham College Strike It Right Academy boxers Jordan Ellison and Adam Cope
Two students from East Durham College’s Strike It Right boxing academy have hit the ground running as they have made their way to the national finals.
Adam Cope, 17, from Hartlepool and Jordan Ellison, 17, from Wingate have both fought their way to the finals of the prestigious National Clubs for Young People’s Championship.
Adam who boxes for Hartlepool based Gus Robinson ABC will travel to Shirebrook Leisure Centre in Derbyshire to fight in the Class B 54-57kg final.
And Jordan, who fights representing Horden ABC, fights at the Charter Sports Centre in Portsmouth in the Class C 57-60kg final. Both fights take place on Friday night.
The Strike It Right academy which was launched in September has been a great success with all of the boxers reaching at least the quarter final stage of the championship tournament.
East Durham College head boxing coach Dave Binns has praised the group for their improvement over the last few months and believes both Adam and Jordan have a great chance of winning this weekend.
Dave said: “All the lads who have joined the academy in this first year have been fantastic.
“They all have a great attitude, and are always looking to learn ways to improve their boxing skill, fitness and performance.
“Adam and Jordan have done really well to get this far in the competition, and although they are both coming up against tough fights they have the skill and ability to go on and win, it’s going to be a great night.”
Led by England ABA coach Dave Binns, the Academy is designed to help advanced level boxers, aged between 16 and 18, who are already competing at boxing clubs to improve their fitness, boxing skills and knowledge whilst also completing academic qualifications at East Durham College.
