Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery
Successful completion of the level 1 programme will allow progression onto the Level 2 programme the following academic year. Ths could lead to a range of jobs in the construction and manufacturing industries, as well as enhancing your job prospects and apprenticeship opportunities.
The main focus of the level 1 programme is to develop practical hand skills and enhance basic underpinning knowledge of relevant industrial processes and techniques. These will be delivered in a workshop environment for practical sessions and classroom based for theory sessions such as technical drawing and I. L. T. Also Incorporated into the study programme will be functional skills (maths & English), tutorial, work experience, academic tutorial and relevant trips & guest visits.
A general interest in construction and a minimum of grade 3 in maths and English. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.
Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.
The qualification consists of three core and three 'trade specific' units:
• Health and safety
• Technical information, quantities and communication
• Construction Technology
• Produce woodworking joints
• Maintain and use Carpentry and Joinery hand tools
• Prepare and use Carpentry and Joinery power tools
The programme is assessed via online exams and practical test pieces for each unit.
1 Year, full time This full time study programme courses may also be available to study on a part-time basis if you are aged 18 or over on 31st August. Please check with Student Services for more details.
