College Interim Principal Eugene McCrossan, Catering Student Vanessa Canning and her lecturer Hillary Marsden

East Durham College student Vanessa Canning recently won the Hospitality and Catering Award at the College’s March Student Awards ceremony.

Vanessa, aged 38 from Seaham, is studying on C&G Level 2 Award in Food safety in Catering.

Her Lecturer Hillary Marsden said: "Punctual and has good attendance.  Is very conscientious and has completed all assessments in Restaurant Service. Always smart with correct uniform and is an excellent team worker.

"Vanessa is always ready for work and works on her own initiative. She listens to instruction; works well with the team and asks for help when required.  She is always keen to learn more."

Lecturer Sharon Flower added: "Vanessa is a very hard working student, always gives her best with everything she does. She is always well presented and represents the department well. Well done."

Lecturer Jean Taylor added: "Vanessa is always “turned out” in full uniform and ready for work. She is keen to learn and has demonstrated (within the practical RWE) that she has listened and is able to complete any task asked of her. She is on track to complete before the end of academic year."

Lecturer Lynn Smith added: "Vanessa is very supportive within her group is up to speed with her course work and always hands homework in on time. Vanessa manages this even though she has a family to support and struggles to get child care at times. Vanessa is a friendly, helpful, outgoing person who is working hard to achieve her goals. Vanessa is an asset to the catering department at East Durham College. Well done Vanessa."
