After you have achieved you NVQ level 2 your can progress to NVQ level 3 or gain employment in the catering industry as a Commis chef or other catering sectors.
On NVQ Level 2 you will cover the units relating to, Poultry, Meat, Fish, Vegetables, Sauces, Hot and cold desserts, cold food preparation with in all the units health and safety, safe and hygienic working practices, maintaining and handling Knives, and working as a team
Preferred hand eye co-ordination with reference to handling knives.
Basic maths and English. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.
Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.

City & Guilds Group Bursaries
C&G run their own bursary programme to help people who are financially unable to complete one of their qualifications. They award bursaries twice a year for people who wish to study for a City & Guilds qualification, but lack the funds. Their bursaries are grants that cover costs arising as a result of taking one of their qualifications which can include course and/or exam fees, learning materials, travel and childcare.
