Throughout October Rob Jones, East Durham College’s Community Rugby League Coach has been coordinating this year’s East Durham Champion Schools Rugby League tournament.
The event has been a huge success and saw no fewer than 9 teams taking part with pupils from Year 7 to Year 11 getting involved.
The pupils from Shotton Hall, St Bedes, Wellfield and Easington Schools all received expert coaching from Rob Jones, Adam Houston and local Rugby League Coach Rob Laverick from Community Club Peterlee Pumas.
All the schools played each other at each the different age groups to establish the winners who will go on to play the West Durham teams. The winners in each age group were:
Year 7 - St. Bedes
Year 8 - Shotton Hall
Year 9 - Shotton Hall
Year 10 - Wellfield
Year 11 - St. Bedes
The games against West Durham will take place on Friday 19th November at Peterlee Pumas Ground from 1pm. The winners will then go to the regional finals at Monkton on 27th November, with the winners of those going on to the national finals.
Rob Jones said: “It’s been a great few months since I came into post and to get things going - all the hard is really starting to pay off. It was very rewarding to see two new schools taking part in this year’s tournament.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to all the teachers who have helped me so far and of course to all the pupils who have been a delight to coach and really enthusiastic.”
