A successful former student of East Durham College visited current childcare students to pass on her knowledge and expertise.

Mandy Thompson, who herself studied childcare at East Durham College back in 2000, has gone on to become a successful Associate Teacher at Wingate Nursery.

She gave the new crop of childcare students a lecture about nursery planning, organising and preparing resources and learning spaces for children and how to help children take charge of their own learning.

Students also learnt how Mandy applied this to her own teaching at Wingate Nursery.

Karen Hogg, 17 from Horden, said: “I think it is very useful to learn from someone who is actually working in a nursery.

“Everything I’ve learnt today will really help me with my assignments and to prepare for my work placement.”

Mandy herself recently enrolled as at part-time student at the College to study on the Foundation Degree in Education and Care to further develop her own career.

“It’s great to be invited back to share my knowledge and experiences, I really enjoy working with the students,” Mandy added.
