After this course you will be qualified to work in the childcare sector as an Early years educator with a licence to practice in the vocational sector. Alternatively you may apply to university on a range of courses in the social sciences department.

Overview of the course: 

This course is designed for students who are interested in working with children aged 0-7yr 11 months. It reflects the latest developments and approaches within the early years sector.
The course aims to prepare students to work competently, safely and effectively and gain essential knowledge and skills to support progression into the next stage of education or into employment.

This qualification prepares you to work unsupervised or in a supervisory capacity with children and their families in a variety of settings which could include nurseries, children centres, home-based child care pre-schools or schools.

The course requires students to spend two days per week on placement.

Entry requirements: 

To enrol on this course you will have progressed from level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education with a minimum of merit grades and a clear disclosure barring service form.

Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.


Topics covered on the course include;Child Development, Play and learning, Physical development and care needs, health and safety, working with parents, supporting speech and language, supporting personal, social and emotional development, safeguarding in the Early years, Observation, Assessment and Planning, Reflective practice, Research skills, The Early years foundation stage and Supporting literacy and numeracy.

How is the course assessed?: 

Units are assessed internally, learners must achieve a minimum of a grade D to be awarded the unit. There is an external Extended Assessment Task which is marked by awarding body.

The course requires students to spend two days per week on placement. Competence is assessed by an allocated assessor who will carry out direct observations of learners in a real work environment.

Further study options after this course: 

On successful completion of the course you will be able to progress to employment in the early years sector. You may also apply for a university course to further your studies.

Length of the course: 

1 year full time This full time study programme courses may also be available to study on a part-time basis if you are aged 18 or over on 31st August. Please check with Student Services for more details.

Free if you are under the age of 19 on the 31st August 2021

Free if you are aged 19-23 on 31st August 2021 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification – contact us to check your qualifications

Loan funded if you already have a full level 3 qualification or are aged 24 and over on 31st August 2021 - contact us to check your qualifications and for details of how to apply for an Adult Learner loan, which you won’t have to start repaying until you earn over £25,725 per annum.
