Overview of the course: 

This course is designed to help you develop knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the care sector. You will explore good practice and its application in the work place. You will also gain understanding of how care values are applied and their importance when working with vulnerable young people and adults.

Entry requirements: 

To enrol on the course you will require five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including maths, English and science. Alternatively, you may have gained a C grade or above on the Cache level 3 certificate in health and social care. You also require a successful reference and a clear DBS (Disclosure Barring Service). Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

Topics: 

Units which may be covered are- Sociological Perspectives in health and social care, Public Health, Promoting Health Education, Nutrition in health and social care, Infection prevention and control, Vocational experience in health and social care, Additional needs in health and social care.

How is the course assessed?: 

All units will be assessed through a range of activities including written tasks, role play, verbal presentations and displays. Learners will also produce a portfolio which evidences their learning and skills in the work place. Each learner will complete assignments made up of tasks for each unit.

Further study options after this course: 

Once you have successfully completed the programme you may progress to a Degree in Adult Nursing, Midwifery, Child Nursing, Dental nursing, social work or other occupational roles associated to the field of health and social care.

Length of the course: 

1 Year - Full Time. This full time study programme courses may also be available to study on a part-time basis if you are aged 18 or over on 31st August. Please check with Student Services for more details.

Fees for this course are;

Free if you are under the age of 19 on the 31st August 2021

Free if you are aged 19-23 on 31st August 2021 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification – contact us to check your qualifications

Loan funded if you already have a full level 3 qualification or are aged 24 and over on 31st August 2021 - contact us to check your qualifications and for details of how to apply for an Adult Learner loan, which you won’t have to start repaying until you earn over £25,725 per annum.

Alternatively you may self fund the course. If you need to pay fees they are:
