On completion of the course you may be able to apply for work in the health and social care sector as a Care Worker or Health Care Assistant. Or on successful completion of the course you may be able to enrol on the second year programme to the Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Overview of the course: 

This course is designed to help you develop knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the care sector. The Certificate is the first year of study for level 3 when successfully completed you will then enrol on the full Extended Diploma for your second year.

Entry requirements: 

To enrol on the course you will require 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Maths, English and Science. You may also hold a level 2 in the subject with a minimum of a Merit and level 1 Functional skills Pass. A successful reference and a clear DBS (disclosure barring check) will be required.
Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

Topics: 

Developing effective communication, equality, diversity and rights in health and social care, health safety and security in health and social care, development through the life stages, sociological perspectives and safeguarding adults are some of the units that may be covered in the qualification. You will also attend work placement for a minimum of one day per week.

How is the course assessed?: 

You will cover a range of units within the course, each will have an assignment for you to complete. Within the assignments you will produce a range of evidence including posters, leaflets, written essays and presentations. You will graded between A*-D for each assignment. You will also be required to complete 1 external assessment, this involves completing an assessment which is set and marked by Cache the awarding body.

Further study options after this course: 

Once you have successfully completed the qualification gaining a grade C or above you can progress onto the Cache Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. Or you may alternatively consider a route into childcare and enrol on Cache Certificate in Childcare and Education.

Length of the course: 

1 Year - Full Time. This full time study programme courses may also be available to study on a part-time basis if you are aged 18 or over on 31st August. Please check with Student Services for more details.

Fees for this course are;

Free if you are under the age of 19 on the 31st August 2021

Free if you are aged 19-23 on 31st August 2021 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification – contact us to check your qualifications

Loan funded if you already have a full level 3 qualification or are aged 24 and over on 31st August 2021 - contact us to check your qualifications and for details of how to apply for an Adult Learner loan, which you won’t have to start repaying until you earn over £25,725 per annum.
