An Easington sports student has been crowned as Durham’s senior girls’ cross-country county champion.

Chloe Price, aged 16, from Peterlee, who studies at East Durham College’s Peterlee Campus took part in the Durham Schools’ Cross Country Championships held at Meadowfield on Saturday 14th January.

Chloe raced over about a 4-mile course, against over 20 other leading runners from across Durham and Tyne & Wear, coming first and a full 46-seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

As a winner, Chloe now qualifies for the County Team to represent the North of England at the English Schools’ Championships on 17th March.

“I was over the moon to win. I was not expecting to as I’m really a track runner, at 800m metre, but run cross country in the winter to build up my strength and stamina,” said a thrilled Chloe.

There were four age groups for boys and girls at the County Championship event, from Year 7 up to the seniors. The other Easington based runners to finish in the top six were Joel Jones (Inter Boys), Keiron Walker (Junior Boys) and Courtney Price (Year 7 Girls).

Chloe, who runs for Durham City Harriers, and the rest of the top 16 finishers in each of the events now go on to to compete in the Schools’ Inter County event between Cumbria, Northumberland and Cleveland at Kirkby Stephen on Saturday, February 4.

After this the full county team will be selected to compete at English Schools’ Championships which will be held at Ilton in Somerset.

The full result of the senior girls was: 1 Chloe Price (Easington) 17.47; 2 Zoe Hewitson (Darl) 18.27; 3 Hayley Bradley (Dur Cen) 19.33; 4 Alison Seadon (Gates) 19.47; 5 Elizabeth Wood (Darl) 20.25; 6 Eleanor Bradbury (Gates) 21.17.
