An East Durham College engineering apprentice student has been shortlisted for a major regional award.

James Faulks, 20, from Ingleby Barwick, who studies at the college as part of his Apprenticeship with Peterlee-based engineering company AKS Ball has been shortlisted for an Outstanding Apprentice of the Year award at the EEF (formerly the Engineering Employers' Federation) Future Manufacturing Awards 2015.

James will travel to the Pavilions of Harrogate at the Great Yorkshire Showgrounds later this week to find out if he has won the award for the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside area on 19th November.

This area is the largest covered by the regional awards in the country and if James is successful at Harrogate he will then be put forward for the national outstanding apprenticeship award against five other regional winners, which would see him travel to London for the finals.

Dion Bowes, apprenticeship trainer and assessor at East Durham College, praised James for the hard work he has put in on his Apprenticeship and believes he has a very exciting career ahead of him.

Dion said: “This is a great achievement for James, we are really proud with how far he has come since joining this Apprenticeship through East Durham College.

“James is a really hard worker and he has gone from strength to strength with the team at AKS Ball.

“This is a fantastic achievement for all involved at the college and AKS Ball and especially James himself.”

Susan Huntsman, HR Manager at AKS Ball, added: “We are extremely proud of this great achievement for James.

“We don’t take on many apprentices here at AKS Ball but we have been really impressed with James since he has joined, he has worked really hard and this nomination is proof of that.

“We will certainly look to take on more apprentices working alongside East Durham College in the future.”
