An East Durham College engineering student has been honoured by one of the region’s top institutions at their annual gala dinner and student awards.
The Northumbria branch of The Welding Institute have awarded East Durham College student, Connor Duncan, 19, from Billingham, with their Student of the Year award, with another EDC student, Adisorn Khampan, 18, from Ingleby Barwick, receiving a runners-up award for his work this year.
The pair received their prestigious awards at the branch’s 83rd Annual Dinner and Student Awards held last week at Newcastle’s Civic Centre.
Both students are on engineering apprenticeships, studying their BTEC and NVQ courses at the college’s purpose built construction and engineering facility, The Technical Academy, based on Peterlee’s South West Industrial Estate.
As part of their apprenticeships, Connor is employed by Durham-based Hope Construction and Adisorn works at Arlington Automotive, based in Newton Aycliffe.
Connor admitted that winning the award came as a huge surprise, but that he felt really proud to see that the hard work he has putting into his course had been recognised.
Connor said: “This award is a huge honour; I am really proud to have been chosen as the winner of such an acclaimed award.
“I really enjoy my course at the college so to have my work noticed for something I really enjoy doing is a great privilege.”
Director of employer engagement at East Durham College, Anthony Mills added: “It was great to see both Connor and Adisorn acknowledged for their hard work across the past year.
“They really are model students, who work very hard and are determined to succeed here at the college and at their work places.
“It was a real honour to see them receive these awards from a great institution and it’s brilliant for them to pick up awards like these so early on in their careers.”
