A group of lucky students got the chance to play out a recent college league match at the Darlington Arena, home to Darlington FC.

The match was organised at The Quakers 25,000 seater ground as part of a deal between Darlington FC and East Durham College’s Elite Scholarship programme which took on a number of the Club apprentices in September who were let go by the beleaguered conference outfit.

The inter-college match between East Durham College and Darlington’s Queen Elizabeth Sixth form saw the Durham-based team beat their Darlo rivals 4 – 1.

The goal scorers for East Durham College were Neil Fannan (1), Ashley Lavan (2) and one for man of the match Kurt Seymour.

East Durham College are currently inviting talented footballers to attend trials to join their prestigious sport scholarship programme’s September intake.

The trails will be held at the College’s Houghall Campus, in Durham, and are open to boys who will be aged 16 or 17 on or before 1st September (current Year 11 and 12 students). They are on Wednesday 4th April and Wednesday 11th April. Registration is at 9.45am on both days.

The scholarship programme, which sees students based at the Houghall Campus, offers an attractive package of incentives and support - along with expert coaching and guidance from the Academy’s top coaching team of ex-professionals.

Successful scholarship winners will receive free training kit, a free laptop, assistance with travel expenses and a range of other bonuses and support.

On the academic side students will be enrolled on to a Level 3 BTEC in Sport Studies, which if they successfully complete the two year programme is the equivalent to three A Levels. Scholars will also gain sports coaching or officiating awards.
