Champion junior boxers have been preparing in East Durham and Hartlepool for a top continental tournament.

Boxers from the age of 14-16 are playing in the European Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria this week where they will boxing against counterparts from around Europe.

Preparation for the event has seen a team of 19 – that has been whittled down to eight for the championships – compete in Ireland, Scotland and England as part of the Great Britain Three Nations Championships.

As well as a development tournament in Engis, France, a training camp at Peterlee’s East Durham College was led by the northern national coach, Martin Utley, and the Tyne and Wear regional coach, Dave Binns, just before the team boarded the plane to Eastern Europe.

The weekend training camp compromised of conditioned sparring sessions, themed partner and bag work, boxing-specific circuit training and a fresh, early morning run across the Hartlepool coast-line.

Martin said: “It was a really good camp up in East Durham and Hartlepool. We looked at the technical and tactics side of the boys’ game.

“It has helped them prepare for the Championships as it was another good bonding session.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the East Durham College staff for helping make the weekend so enjoyable in such an excellent facility.”
