Yesterday East Durham College hosted a special careers event for local Year 9 school pupils.

The One Step Beyond event, now it its third year, aims to help young people explore possible future careers to assist them while they make their option choices going into GCSEs.

Over 800 pupils from Seaham, Dene, St Bedes’, Shotton Hall and Wellfield schools attended the event to get information on what options were available to them when they finish school and beyond.

The College worked in partnership with local schools and learning providers to bring together a wide showcase of what the local area has to offer from further education colleges, sixth forms and universities.

Sally Hudson, Vice-Principal at the College, explained: “It’s very important to help young people as early as possible to start thinking about what they might do after school and what career they’d like to pursue.

“The choices they make in Year 9 will start to set them down a particular route, so it’s important that they make their options with an eye beyond school and even college.”
