A group of East Durham College Hair & Beauty students competed against hundreds of other students in the recent regional heats of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) annual college’s competition.

The highly competitive and prestige event took place on Monday 6th February at the Federation Brewery in Gateshead.

The college teams competed in 10 different categories ranging from face & body painting and classic 1940’s makeup to barbering and nail art.

An impressive performance by the group, of over 40 students from the College, saw them collect a number of top 4 places and finish third overall, in what is the region’s largest hairdressing competition.

Simon Smith, Head of the H&B Department, said: “There were some tremendous individual performances, and despite not repeating last year’s first place in the team event, it was a great effort by all our students that took part.”

In the competition, that’s judged by a panel of experts from the hair and beauty industry, a particular highlight for the College was first and second place in the Barbering Category.

Part-time student Danielle Forster, aged 20 from Peterlee, who works at Ko Ko Hair Design in Peterlee, claimed top spot, with fellow EDC part-student Ken Ball, 44, from Consett, bagging the Silver.

It was a very close run thing with Danielle beating fire fighter Ken who won this category last year. Ken, who works at Nuts Barbers in Consett, also works as a District Commander for the Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue.

Danielle said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to bits to win first place! I’m so proud of myself as I was competing against many other students from different colleges”

Ken added: “I’m delighted as well to get placed again, especially after last years win. It just shows how dedicated and helpful my tutors have been.”

Other students for the College to get a top four finish were; Ashleigh Chapman (2nd in Classical 40’s Makeup), Louisa Hutton (2nd in Nail Art), Sara Potts (2nd in Body Art), Lisa Stoker & Jade Garside(3rd in Team Bridal) and Donna Slater (4th Ladies Evening Style).

All those that finished in the top four have now qualified to compete against the cream of the UK’s up-and-coming talent from over 50 colleges across England, Scotland and Wales at the AHT National Final at The Blackpool Winter Gardens Hair Festival to be held on Sunday 11th and Monday 12th March.
